A quadtree does the same thing for two-dimensional space. It takes a rectangular region and divides it into four equal quadrants: northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast. Greyscale rendering is deliberate. Gupta et al. (2023, “GlyphNet”) found that greyscale outperforms colour for glyph comparison because extreme contrast preserves edge detail through resize. No image augmentation either: flipping or rotating characters creates unrealistic glyphs.
